In Memoriam: The NAUI Family Remembers Rick Moore

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that the NAUI family bids farewell to a beloved member, Rick Moore, who passed away in Baton Rouge, LA on August 28, 2023. Rick’s legacy within the NAUI community is nothing short of inspiring; his contributions have left an indelible mark on the organization and its members.

Rick’s journey with NAUI began in 1978 when he embraced the role of a NAUI Instructor, sharing his passion for diving with countless individuals. In the early 1980s, his expertise caught the attention of NAUI leaders, who recruited him to train aspiring NAUI Instructors. This endeavor became Rick’s passion and mission. In September 1986, he assumed a pivotal role, leading the SW NAUI Branch, which covered Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana.

In 1986, Rick attained the prestigious position of Course Director of NAUI Instructor Training Courses (ITCs), showcasing his dedication and expertise. Collaborating with fellow NAUI Instructors, he pioneered a NAUI ITC Candidate Recruiting Process, significantly boosting the number of new NAUI leaders in the SW Branch. Rick’s remarkable contributions were recognized in 1991 when he received the NAUI Outstanding Service Award.

Throughout his tenure, Rick played a vital role in shaping the future of NAUI. In the late 1990s, as NAUI sought to restructure its non-profit corporation for greater competitiveness, Rick’s guidance proved invaluable. His expertise led to the formation of NAUI Services Group (NSG), a for-profit corporation aimed at enhancing NAUI’s financial standing. In 2002, he assumed the role of Chair of the NSG Board of Directors, leveraging his corporate management background and experience in mergers and acquisitions to foster NAUI and NSG’s growth. Rick’s influence was instrumental in acquiring the current headquarters property in Florida, ensuring a stable foundation for NAUI’s future endeavors.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Rick Moore was a beacon of inspiration and a mentor to countless NAUI members and leaders. His impact extended far beyond the realm of diving; he was a true friend and confidant, enriching the lives of everyone he encountered.

As we bid farewell to this extraordinary individual, we remember Rick Moore not only for his immense contributions but also for his warmth, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to the NAUI Family. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of divers, reminding us of the enduring spirit of camaraderie that defines our community.
